Omaha – Day 1.5

OK. I made it to Omaha.

It was a busy day yesterday: finish packing, pick up rental car, load car, drive, meet Josh Broton and Michael Beckwith for lunch in Sioux Falls, drive, “check-in” at Entrepreneur House, stop by Flywheel, try to drop rental car, fill up with gas, drop rental car, taxi back to Flywheel, BEGIN CLASS, Lyft home, and crash.

Whew.

Living Arrangements

Omaha Entrepreneur HouseI’m staying in a house in what I think is “Midtown” Omaha. I’ve never been to Omaha before, so I have no idea about anything really. It’s an Entrepreneur House which means that I have five roomies that are enrolled in a year-long program to launch their businesses. I think they’ve been here since August. The room I’ve got is an Airbnb room that is usually rented out for short-term guests. I’m kind of breaking their model, but it’s really going to work out well for me, and I hope for them. It’s an older home, but it kind of reminds me of a house I lived in as a kid.

The Course

Flywheel "classroom"So I’ve been to one course session at this point. There’s 10 folks in the course and I didn’t count, but it seems pretty evenly divided between men and women. There’s a variety of ages and experience levels too. I think it’s going to be a really great group. I’m looking forward to getting to know them all better.

I got a copy of the complete course syllabus today and this course really does feel that it was made for me. I’m not going to claim that I know much about anything, but I’m certainly more front-end than back-end oriented at this point. While we’re going to be starting with front-end topics (of course), we’ll be getting into more back-end stuff starting in week 3. I am dying to get there, but I’m enjoying hearing what I don’t know about front-end stuff too.

Today I’ve been busy catching up as I’ve been a bit distracted these past few days. I’ve got to continue working while I’m here, too. First, because I have projects in process, but also because I think it’s going to cost a bit more to be here than I had hoped. I was thinking I might be able to walk to class, but that seems a bit… dodgy? Plus Lyft costs twice as much per trip than I was expecting. So my transportation costs have essentially quadrupled. On the upside, I’ll get a chance to practice what I’m learning right away – and have lots of time to do it since I’m not going to be able to get out much.

Oh, and I ordered a mug for tea. They have some mugs here, but they’re not the type I prefer. So I?customized this mug because it seemed appropriate for my circumstances. 🙂
